The worth of wise, modest steps forward

These two remarkable stories say so much about what is possible in Afghanistan.

RAZIA’S Ray of Hope school in Deh’Subz, Afghanistan, (just outside Kabul) continues to go forward even during this difficult time. Their secret: finding ways to work that do not give in to corruption nor shame those with whom they must work. Rather than focussing on what can’t be done, they find steps that are so small they appear to be nothing at all — until much is done (!): 

1) When the change in government happened last August, the school was in the process of building an entirely new, large school for grades K-12.  That work never stopped. Using local workers, they not only built the school but gave much needed income to the men doing the work.

2) Working calmly and patiently, they recently got permission
to allow their older students (grades 7-12) to come to school in small groups to socialize and check out books from the library to use at home.  They provide the girls with transportation to and from the library. The school purchased a considerable number of new books, including enjoyable non-school related books to lift the older girls’ spirits at this time (as they are still barred from going to school).

3) The school sends non-perishable food packets home to all the girls’ families (even those students not allowed to attend school). They have literally fed thousands during this time.

THE Fardah Roshan Academy was founded by a father and daughter in New Jersey, U.S.A.  They came up with the idea of “micro schools” — one on each street in the Kandahar region of Afghanistan.     

     They find one family willing to host a home school. Children within 2 or 3 houses of the host school are invited to attend. A local woman is paid to be the teacher. As girls are not forbidden to visit a neighbor, this system is not in conflict with the current edict that has closed central schools. Parents are not afraid to send their children to a neighbor’s house to learn. A local woman is able to earn an income to help her family. High quality educa- tional materials are provided to each teacher for every student.


Such stories cannot be overestimated in what they are doing—and proving.
