Our special high school student from Afghanistan, Mashal, has been reading about different professions in preparation for graduating from high school this year.  One profession that particularly interests him is that of being an inventor.  After reading about other inventors, Mashal was then asked what he would invent.  Here is his answer.

I thought of three things that people really need [a good start for any inventor] and so these would be my first inventions:

1) A machine that cuts hair perfectly for your head and makes your hair wonderful without needing a barber.

2) A machine that cooks any food when you just type name of the food into the machine.

3) An internet machine that sends people to any place they want to go.

                                                                       — Mashal
. . .

Mashal has also begun corresponding with another student, Mohamed, from The School Inside.  Mohamed is from Egypt and is an inventor.  Here is Mohamed’s first letter to Mashal.

Hello Mashal,

When we talk about inventors, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, Graham Bell and many incredible people always come to our minds. Then we think that these people are geniuses—and, of course, they are! No one can make inventions like them. But I don’t think genius is the only reason for their success.

I think the real reason is their passion. Edison did more than 10,000 attempts to make the first long lasting light bulb. After he succeeded he said, “I never failed. I just found 10,000 ways that don’t work”.  The words “giving up” were not found in Edison’s dictionary. When you are following your passion, you will find yourself working with zero stress. When they asked Edison how many hours he was working per day he said, “I never did a day’s work in my life. It was all fun”.

So my first advice is to follow your passion and live your dream.

The second advice is to think “out of the box”.  That means, don’t think like other people think. Think beyond, and more, than they think. Always dream higher and run over people’s expectations. Go beyond them.  They say there is an important market rule that you have to ask customers what they want.  But when Henry Ford invented his first automobile, he said, “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses”.

My major advice is that you follow your passion. Believe me, you may work for more than 8 hours per day for several years, but you will hate your life if you look back and see that you hated your work. After following your passion, you can decide what special skills you need to practice and where you need to learn more. If your passion is mechanical engineering, don’t hesitate to ask me any thing you want.  Good luck

                                                                                                     Your friend, Mohamed
