Story by Katya from Ukraine. Katya’s native languages are Ukrainian and Russian. This year Katya will be a senior in high school.

THIS was the brightest summer of my life. The weather was wonderful and my days were so happy! I really enjoyed my summer holiday.

Almost the entire first month of my vacation I spent at work and earned enough money to go to visit my aunt in the city of Kiev. I went with my best friend for a week and together we walked across the city!

I have been in Kiev several times, but this is first time I saw our beautiful capital from one side to the other. We visited many interesting places, such as the Kiev Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, and Khreshchatyk [the main, central street in Kiev]. We also had fun just walking down the streets. When we didn’t know how to get somewhere, we asked someone on the street and, to our surprise, we were gladly helped by everyone. One man even took us to the right place!

Then, more recently, I went to the country to visit my grandparents. It was that part of the summer when people start to do all their canning— when we prepare all our vegetables for the winter. So now I know how to can, too, and I can help my grandparents.

Here are some of my photos from Kiev on the left.  I really hope you enjoy them!
